Essay 2: Dissents

I believe in objective truth.

I believe we can have some objective knowledge.

I believe that people shouldn't participate in behaviors that make society weak.

I believe that cultivating moral character is more important than teaching adherence to whichever economic/social theory is currently in vogue.

I believe that people shouldn't be discriminated against because of their religious beliefs.

I believe that religious belief is rationally justifiable, and can be followed in good faith.

I believe that the family is the most important force for societal success, and that the long term effects of policies can be accurately predicted by how they incentivize the creation and stability of families.

I believe that sex is very important psychologically as a way to build meaningful long term connection.

I believe that our biology remembers that sex is an act of two people creating a family, not an act of individual identity. Birth control is new, and our brains have a lot of evolution to do to catch up to it.

I believe that a culture which treats sex as simultaneously the most important feature of a person and at the same time as a completely meaningless and cheap act will in the long run see a very toxic decay of the fibers which tie society together, and will see responsibility and deference replaced by toxic individualism.

I believe that all people are capable of tyranny, and that we need to be careful when groups of people claim to have all of the answers and demand conformity.

I believe that we should treat data honestly- that we should be honest with ourselves about the relative risks of societal decisions, free from ideologically driven skew.

I believe that liars shouldn't be rewarded.

I believe that the weak should be protected.

I believe that the lazy should eat less.

I believe that people have free will, and that many of our outcomes are due solely to our efforts. I believe that a society that runs away from this fact will collapse in a form of the tragedy of the commons.
