The Speed of Oops

To lay the groundwork for this, it is worth looking at the psychology of error and why admitting we were wrong feels like a physical threat to the human brain.

For most of our evolutionary history, social status within a tribe was directly tied to survival. Admitting a mistake, showing logical inconsistency, or changing one's mind publicly was not seen as an act of scientific integrity; it was a sign of weakness that could lower one's status, leading to social exclusion. Consequently, our brains developed powerful defensive reflexes. When confronted with evidence that contradicts our beliefs, our amygdala powers up, treating the logical challenge as a physical threat. We double down, rationalize, and defend our errors to protect our social position, even when the map in our head clearly mismatches the territory of reality.

To override this reflex, we must shift the social incentives. If we live in a culture that punishes error and rewards the performance of consistency, we will never admit mistakes. We will continue to run our systems into the ground, pretending that our failures are actually hidden victories. A healthy scene must build a different rule: treating "saying oops" not as a source of shame, but as a major cognitive relief. The speed of a rationalist is measured by how quickly they can discard a false map once the evidence arrives. Admitting error is the only way to clear the circuit and start routing signals correctly.

This January, we will discuss how to build this cognitive flexibility in our room. We will explore how to make the admission of error a low-cost, high-reward act among friends, allowing us to debug our logic quickly and proceed with greater analytical realism.
