How the levels answer back

At the nearest scale, win a familiar small board with three marks in a line.

Three settled small boards win an Ultimate board; three settled Ultimate boards win the whole game.

After an ordinary move, play remains in the same Ultimate board. The cell chosen identifies the next small board.

Winning a small board advances the argument one scale: its position identifies the next Ultimate board, while the final cell identifies the small board within it.

Warm shading marks that destination. If it is already settled, the restriction relaxes outward until an open branch is available.
